The sanctuary falls under Kaikalur Forest Range. The lake's average depth is four metres. The lake is, however, prone of drastic reduction in its total volume of water in summers. To protect the aquatic life in the lake and to maintain a steady water level, water is channeled into the lake from a nearby source. ==Sanctuary== The lake is visited by an estimated 2,00,000 birds, which include Asian openbills, painted storks, glossy ibises, black-headed ibises, teals, northern pintails, northern shovelers, red-crested pochards, black-winged stilts, pied avocets, common redshanks and cormorants. It attracts migratory birds from countries like Australia, Siberia, Egypt and the Philippines between the months of October and March
